Apple eyeing Grand Central Terminal retail space

24 May, 2011 (07:04) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

In the on-again, off-again rumors about Apple lining up retail space in Grand Central Terminal (often incorrectly dubbed "Station"), it appears its on again. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is indeed in discussions 15,000 sq. ft. space in the terminal, which would be a fairly large retail outlet, although not the Cupertino, CA company's largest.

Reports of Apple seeking to put a retail store in Grand Central Terminal first surfaced in early February. There were some rumors indicating that the store could even be Apple's largest, but a few weeks later, info arose stating that Apple had reversed its plans.

There's no certainty Apple would get the space. Grand Central Terminal openings are filled by an open bidding process (which would, of course mean that Apple's plans would have to be made public). In addition, the current tenant is vacating the space early, and would need to be compensated for vacating his lease.

Here's what the WSJ said:
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is looking for new tenants for a marquee space in Grand Central Terminal, and computer giant Apple Inc. has expressed interest in putting a store there.

The agency is looking for a single renter for two adjacent balconies on the north and east sides of the terminal. It will issue a request for proposals Monday. The current tenant of one of the balconies, celebrity chef Charlie Palmer's Métrazur restaurant, plans to close July 1 even though his lease ran until 2019 and the eatery was doing "quite well," Mr. Palmer said Sunday.

A new tenant would be required to pay Mr. Palmer a substantial sum of money to vacate his lease.
Palmer currently pays $400,000 annually for the space. That price was nogotiated just after the GCT's renovation was completed in 1998. The MTA, which projects large budget deficits in the coming years, is convinced it can get much more than that at current rates.

Nintendo 3DS Bill of Materials cost estimated to be $101

26 March, 2011 (16:27) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

The Nintendo 3DS is set to launch on March 27 in North America, at the price of $250, which for a handheld game, is pretty expensive. That said, how much of that is profit for the company?

It's not an official analysis of the device, but Eurogamer has received a preliminary estimate of the Bill of Materials cost of the device, and according to the folks at UBM TechInsights, the Bill of Materials for the 3DS' is about $101 per unit.

That, of course, is not pure profit for Nintendo. Not only does the company have to factor in R&D, advertising, but there is also the fact that the company only gets the wholesale amount from retailers.

While that amount is not known, Eurogamer said that reliable sources told it the company was receiving £170.63 from retailers. Given the £230 U.K. price, that means that Nintendo is taking home about £59.37 or about $95.47.

Of course, the Nintendo 3DS has some awesome hardware. Factor in the 3D gaming, and the fact that the 3DS requires no glasses to boot. Add in the custom PICA200 graphics processor from Japanese start-up Digital Media Professionals (DMP), and the proprietary Nintendo ARM processor, the gyroscope, accelerometer, wi-fi, and more, and it's an impressive system.

HMV marketing chief Gennaro Castaldo said that the price tag is about right:
"I can see why it sounds like quite a sum of money to some people, but we're talking about brilliant new technology here that will have cost many millions to develop, so it's understandable that Nintendo and other parties involved feel a need to make a return on it.

"Also - think how many times it will be used and enjoyed over its lifetime, so as players we'll end up getting a great deal of value out of it over a number of years. Very little comes cheap in this world, and we all know that if you want something of real quality, then you have to pay for it."
The Nintendo 3DS was announced on March 23, 2010 and officially unveiled it at E3 2010 on June 15, 2010. It launched in Japan on on February 26, 2011 and in Europe on March 25, 2011.

Zynga aims to be gaming’s Google

25 July, 2010 (17:18) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

You may not have heard of Zynga, but you have probably heard of one of its creations, Farmville. The founder of Zynga, Marc Pincus, 44, has high expectations for his firm, aiming, the New York Times says, to become the Google of gaming.

Notice that he didn't say the Google of social gaming, although that's what the Zynga Game Network specializes in. Instead, he's aiming for games, period. Based on recent history, it's not out of the question. For example, Facebook needed 4 1/2 years to reach 100 million users, but Zynga required only 2 1/2 years.

Popcap GamesMoney doesn't seem to be a problem. Recently, it was reported that Google invested a sum of money in Zynga, and the NYT comfirmed that.

Zynga recently received $520 million in financing, which included the funds from Google. According to anonymous sources, some of that cash was $300 million via two roughly equal investments from Softbank and Google.

The NYT also notes that Zynga's employee base has risen from 375 a year ago to 1,000 now, with 400 openings. Inside Network, which tracks Facebook apps, says Zynga is on track to make as much as $500 million in revenue this year.

Given all that, and considering Zynga's Internet presence (it's not going to build a game for a PC in the lines of Starcraft 2, after all), perhaps Google should acquire the company rather than investing in it.

What do you readers think? After all, Google wants to be all things Internet. It would, however, derail Pincus' goal of becoming the Google of gaming, and it would cost a pretty penny, too: Zynga's value has been estimated to be $4.5 billion.

Hence the hike in her fee. This fact isn’t amiss on the jewellery brand as well. For we learn that the brand is seriously considering Mallika’s demand for a fatter pay cheque.
