AGI is more than $57,000, the IRS offers Free File Fillable Forms

Let’s face it. Taxes can be stressful for some taxpayers and anything that you can do to make it easier on yourself, the better.

That said, some folks may not have the means to pay a preparer. Or maybe you’re just a masochist and want to do your own taxes for fun (it happens). Free (or low cost) tax preparation services and software are available, you just have to find them. Follows are some resources that might be helpful:

  • IRS Free File. The IRS wants you to use Free File. I know this because they send me a lot of emails telling me so. They also shout at taxpayers on their web site: EVERYONE is Eligible to Free File! Since it’s in all caps, you know they’re serious. There are two versions of Free File: one, a free, federal income tax prep and electronic filing program for eligible taxpayers and the other, Free File Fillable Forms (see more below).
    • The Free File program that you and I tend to think of is the free, federal income tax prep and electronic filing program developed through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, a group of private sector tax software companies. With the program, eligible taxpayers can do their federal income tax returns using commercial online software available through IRS.gov. Eligible taxpayers mean those that have Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $57,000 or less; believe it or not, the IRS says that encompasses 70% of taxpayers. Other limits may also apply; you can use the Free File online tool to find a company that’s best suited to you.
    • If your AGI is more than $57,000, the IRS offers Free File Fillable Forms – try saying that three times quickly. Free File Fillable Forms is a simple electronic equivalent of paper forms. The software performs some basic math and field error checking but that’s it. It does not walk you through your tax return in an “interview” fashion like many retail software packages. This means that you have to have a certain level of comfort with your tax returns in order to use the software.

IBM has agreed to buy San Mateo, California-based DemandTec for $13.20 a share, or $440

IBM has agreed to buy San Mateo, California-based DemandTec for $13.20 a share, or $440 million after adjusting for balance sheet cash. IBM said the deal will provide it with “cloud-based price, promotion and other merchandising and marketing analytics to help companies better define the best price points and product mix based on customer buying trends.”

The deal comes at a nearly 57% premium to yesterday’s close at $8.43.

This is the latest in a string of acquisitions involving cloud-based software companies, including this week’s $3.4 billion acquisition of SuccessFactors by SAP, and Oracle‘s recent $1.5 billion bid for RightNow.

DemandTec provides cloud-based analytics software that help businesses examine different customer buying scenarios, both online and in-store.

DemandTec has about 450 customers worldwide in retail, consumer products and other industries. The company also had a portfolio of 31 relevant patents. DemandTec, which has more than 350 employees, will be integrated into IBM’s Software Group.

The deal is subject to DemandTec holder approval and the usual regulatory approvals. Closing is expects in Q1 2012.

McAfee releases iOS version of WaveSecure security app

Major antivirus firms have noted that mobile is the wave of the future, and the latest to join the group is McAfee. Although McAfee has had a version of WaveSecure on Android for some time, this is the first time consumers will have an opportunity to get McAfee security on iOS.

Students and teachers save up to 80% on software! The new WaveSecure iOS Edition is $19.95, and is available from the iTunes store. Corporate iPhone users have already had access to McAfee's security technology via its Enterprise Mobility Manager software.

WaveSecure requires iOS 4.0 or greater. With it, an iPhone user can wirelessly back up his contacts, photos and videos from the iPhone, as well as track his device's location, with or without GPS enabled, through the McAfee WaveSecure online portal.

Nicely, if you were to lose your iDevice and (iDevices users would say) went to Android for a replacement, you could sync your data back to the Android device using the Android version of WaveSecure.

Buy Now!More security software companies are seeing the "gold" that is mobile, and adding security offerings for those platforms. Symantec recently saw the Android version of its mobile security app, Norton Mobile Security Lite, exit beta.

McAfee's move of making the app sell for a one-time fee is a bit unusual. Companies like Lookout and Symantec, as well, often give the app away for free, but charge a subscription for an enhanced feature set.

The subscription model is common in desktop security, as well.

McAfee acquired the WaveSecure technology when it bought tenCube, the creator of WaveSecure, a year ago. Also about a year ago, Intel announced it had acquired McAfee.

Intel releases v2.0 of its SSD Toolbox

11 September, 2010 (07:07) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Intel has released version 2.0 of its SSD Toolbox application. SSDs, or solid-state drives, use flash me mory as in a USB flash drive instead of the heads and platters of a traditional hard drive.

Free Shipping at DermStoreAs such, SSDs require different configuration and tuning to keep them healthy. For example, the TRIM function in Windows 7 keeps the drives from slowing down over time, as their space is filled.

However, other Windows OSes may not be so kind to your SSD. Certainly, Windows XP and Windows Vista do not, but Windows Server 2008 R2 does.

That is where the Intel SSD Toolbox comes in. You can schedule TRIM sessions, for one. You can check the health of your drive, as well, and the new Intel SSD Toolbox v2.0 adds a System Configuration Tuner and a Secure Erase function.

The Secure Erase function would need, we assume, no introduction. On the other had, the System Configuration Tuner is designed to optimize an end-users SSD for his specific setup. The utlity checks the system configuration and "optimizes settings for best performance, power efficiency and endurance." It checks settings of four key functions:
  • Superfetch/prefetch
  • ReadyBoost
  • DIPM—power management
  • Disk Defragmenter
For example, with an SSD, it's recommended that the prefetch and disk defragmentation be disabled.  These were created to speed up the performance of traditional hard disk drives.

There are third-party software utilities for optimizing these settings, and the disk defragmentation software companies have seen the impending doom and begun including SSD optimization features in their software (e.g., DisKeeper and PerfectDisk).  The Intel SSD Toolkit is free to download and use, though naturally most of its functionality requires an Intel SSD (not Patriot, OCZ, or any other manufacturer).
