27 September, 2011 (13:31) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Amazon.com has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today's app is Treasures of Montezuma 2.

Treasures of Montezuma 2 is priced at $3.07 in the Android Market, and is normally priced at $1.99 in the Amazon Appstore. As we noted previously, prices sometimes differ between the two stores.

We're wondering why Treasures of Montezuma 2 is the free app of the day for the second straight day. It's not like the game is Angry Birds. It's something that's never been done before, although when Amazon.com launched it made Angry Birds Rio its first free app when the store opened, and continued to keep it free for a while. At the time, however, it continued to have issue new free daily apps.

Treasures of Montezuma 2 is described as follows:
Welcome Back to the Jungle

Ancient Aztec secrets and riddles, plenty of magical artifacts, and three game modes await you in Treasures of Montezuma 2 for your Android phone. Combine pieces of the same color and complete missions within the given time for bonus scores and gold, which you spend on various upgrades. When you discover Aztec magic and gather all the precious jewels, you will rebuild the Heavenly City: Tenochtitlan.

Switch and Click

In The Treasures of Montezuma 2 is an all new match-three game with more levels, more challenges, and more fun. Charge up your totems and unleash special powers by making multiple token matches. Rack up a high score by activating Lightning Speed with a series of insanely fast matches. Finally, unlock trophies for performing amazing feats as you collect all of the gems on each level before your time runs out.

This cleverly designed and beautifully animated rendition of the original Treasures of Montezuma for your PC, originally created by Alawar, brings the match-three fun to your mobile phone.
Product Reviews

"The Treasures of Montezuma 2 features the relatively standard modes of Adventure, Survival, and Puzzle at its core, but the game also jams two extra styles of gameplay into the match-three gameplay to keep things fresh, with the aforementioned buildings helping add spice to the bonus blocks, and hidden treasure adding much-needed additional interest." - Peter Eykemans, Pocket Gamer

"Surprisingly the game is fun and addicting. I was not expecting to play a game like this but it really is. Solid 8/10." - Jay Booshay, What's Good Blog
Treasures of Montezuma 2 has a 4.3-star rating in the Android Market, and a 4.0-star rating in the Amazon Appstore.

invisibleSHIELDWe don't have much to say today in addition to our prior comments. We hope Amazon.com isn't entering into a "phase" of these sorts of repeats. If they want to repeat an app, let's make it something useful, like a useful utility (Tasker?).

Just to rehash, there is a free version (Lite) in the Android Market as well. Some of the complaints in the Amazon Appstore are not about the game itself, but the game genre. In other words, they were "aaagh, not another Bejeweled clone!" type reviews, rather than commenting on the game itself.

Amazon.com opened up the Appstore despite a lawsuit by Apple, which has previously trademarked the term "App Store." Microsoft has filed an appeal against that trademark, saying the term is too generic. Amazon.com has responded to the lawsuit in the same manner.

Playable Les Paul Google Doodle receives permanent site

12 June, 2011 (07:07) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Google's Les Paul Google Doodle, which was put up on Thursday in celebration of what would have been the inventor of the electric guitar's 96th birthday, has proved so popular that Google has given it a permanent site.

The interactive Les Paul Doodle allows users to play actual guitar chords. U.S. users can even record and share their "performances," as did this one man who did a pretty good rendition of "Hey, Jude" on the Doodle. The >new site location is http://www.google.com/logos/2011/lespaul.html.

Even before putting up a permanent site for the Doodle, Google acknowledged its popularity. The Internet giant left the Doodle up for a second day in response.

This isn't the first such Doodle to get its own page. Examples include a May 2010 playable tribute to Pac-Man's 30th anniversary, which proved so popular that Google moved it to http://www.google.com/pacman/. A Jules Verne Doodle also got its own site, at http://www.google.com/logos/verne_hd.html. This one was modified, however, to remove the "porthole effect" of the original Doodle.

As with the original, use the lever on the right to dive or rise; if viewed on a mobile device, you can do the same by tilting the device, as the Doodle recognizes the device accelerometer.

Man uses Les Paul tribute Google Doodle to play ‘Hey, Jude’

Google's Doodle on Thursday was a tribute to Les Paul. Paul invented the electric guitar and passed away in 2009. Thursday was his 96th birthday.

Unlimited Online Backup $4.95 120x120The Doodle was, in fact, a playable interactive Doodle. A user could not just interact with the guitar strings and play chords, they could record their "performance," as well.

You had to figure someone would obsessively work at it until they produced something really good. And thus, we have Mitch, lead singer of the band, After Edmund.

Christina Aguilera blasted by social media after flub during Super Bowl XLV National Anthem

7 February, 2011 (08:22) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

In this day of social media, it didn't take long for the Internet to react to Christina Aguilera's flub of the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV on Sunday. Perhaps it was nervousness, but she could hardly have chosen a worse venue to make a mistake at.

Christina Aguilera's National Anthem rendition went bad with the fourth line of the Star-Spangled Banner. The line should have been "O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?" Instead, Aguilera used the mucked together line, "What so proudly we watch'd at the twilight’s last reaming."

That line was almost the same as the second line of the National Anthem, which reads "What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?" Close, except for the fact it was in the wrong place, and it was not "watched," but "hail'd," and certainly not "reaming," but "gleaming." We doubt that Francis Scott Key had reaming in mind on the day he wrote the Star-Spangled Banner.

What Christina Aguilera's National Anthem at the Super Bowl should have been is the following:
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Twitter went aflame with comments on Aguilera's FUBAR. Additionally, someone quickly edited her Wikipedia page to note the flub.

It wasn't the worst screw-up at the Super Bowl, however. At least she didn't have a wardrobe malfunction, as Janet Jackson suffered at Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Additionally, it probably won't replace Rosanne as the worst Star-Spangled Banner rendition. It might, however, at least make the top 10 list, which was compiled earlier by Time.

Watch Aguilera flub the Star-Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XLV, then watch Rosanne at a 1990 San Diego Padres game.

The Monster Mash song: it’s still a YouTube smash

30 October, 2010 (07:01) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

With Halloween comes candy, but also, another bump to the YouTube statistics for any rendition of the Monster Mash song. Debuting in 1962, it became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year, reaching that peak just in time for Halloween, on Oct. 20th. It has been a perennial Halloween favorite ever since.

Since then, the song has been re-released several times, and managed to make it back onto the Billboard charts three times after the original release, in Dec. 1962, August 1970, and May of 1973. Interestingly, the Monster Mash song was banned from the BBC when it was first released, with the BBC saying it was "too morbid." Eventually, they relented, and the song was released in the U.K. in 1973, peaking at No. 3 in early October, again in time for Halloween. It again re-entered the British Charts on November 2, 2008 at #60.

Meanwhile, every year, around this time, the Monster Mash song hits the Internet via YouTube and other video sites. There are so many different versions, that no single one gets a huge number of hits, but the one below is arguably the "best." It plays the Monster Mash song atop a series of clips (including audio) from a series of horror films (some of them quite corny).

Also, a reminder: Halloween will be here on Sunday, and for those who wonder when Daylight Savings Time ends: it is, at least for now, always the weekend after Halloween.  Indeed, a delay to the end of DST was lobbied for by candy companies for years.
