T-Mobile officially announces the second-gen "new" myTouch

5 October, 2010 (07:01) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

T-Mobile has officially launched the second-generation HTC myTouch. Previously known as the myTouch HD, it's dubbed, wait for it, the "new" myTouch.

This will create havoc when folks are comparing myTouch smartphones: "Is that the old myTouch or the new myTouch?" It's already bad enough that T-Mobile also has the slider myTouch Slide 3G.

Speaking of the "new" myTouch, just what are the specs? Well, it supports T-Mobiles HSPA+ network, carries a second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz MSM8255 processor, a 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen, Android 2.2 (Froyo), a 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, a front-facing camera for video calling (including over 3G), 802.11n wi-fi, DLNA and it includes an 8GB microSD card.

In terms of the all-important colors, the "new" T-Mobile myTouch will come in white, black, plum or red.

When and how much? When is the vague "in time for the holidays," which for most folks would translate to "at least by Black Friday." How much is not known, but you can sign up for updates at T-Mobile's website.

Fring launches not-so-subtly-named FringOut service to compete with SkypeOut

21 September, 2010 (07:01) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Skype and Fring haven't exactly been best buds of late, and things probably won't get any better after this announcement. Fring has announced its new FringOut service, which not-so-subtly is along the lines of SkypeOut, allowing users to make phone calls to landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world.

Formerly, Fring's best asset was Skype access. Since the earlier kerfuffle, however, that access no longer exists.

Sadly, FringOut only works on Nokia phones currently. Meanwhile, Android and iOS support will be "soon available," according to Fring’s press release (below). For those who want to do comparison shopping, there’s a rate calculator at the Fring website.

Meanwhile, Fring has released a video, ironically, on Google's YouTube (Google recently announced similar plans for world domination in the same market space via its Google Voice service).
