AT&T announced on Thursday it's joining the Android bandwagon. It announced that the Motorola Backflip, a uniquely designed device that flips backwards, so its keyboard and screen are both facing out, will be available on March 7th.

The Motorola Backflip was announced at CES in January. However, at the time, no carrier was announced, though it was clear from the device specs that it would be a fit for AT&T's GSM network. AT&T is the only of the big 4 U.S. wireless carriers that has not released an Android phone.

The Backflip will cost $99 with a two-year service agreement and a $100 mail-in rebate. Much like the Motorola Cliq, the device will have MOTOBLUR, Motorola's social networking "skin" on it. It will also be the first Motorola device to have Backtrack, which uses a touch panel (like a trackpad) behind the screen which allows users to navigate through websites, menus, e-mails and more without blocking any part of the screen with their fingers. The Backflip runs Android version 1.5, upgradeable to 2.1. Spec-wise, the Backflip has 512 MB ROM, 256 MB RAM, a 3.1 inch 320 x 480 (HVGA) display, a 528 MHz CPU, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, and a-GPS, an accelerometer, a compass, microSD slot (2GB microSD card installed, supports up to 32GB).

While the Backflip is AT&T's first Android smartphone, it has this mildly successful other device known as the iPhone that has been sucking up its bandwidth. It will be interesting to see what the experience of Backflip users will be on AT&T's 3G network.
