AT&T to add iPhones to standard device insurance program, starting July 17

It's unclear what AT&T's deductible on the iPhone 4 will be, but the site says the insurance has a $50/$125 per approved claim, "depending on the device model." That probably means it will be $125 for the iPhone 4.
The caveat: you need to apply for the insurance within 30 days of purchase. That means those who bought anytime before about mid-June will be out of luck by the time July 17 rolls around. Additionally, the "replacement device" can be refurbished or new, AT&T's choice.
In the past we would have pointed to SquareTrade's warranty system as another option. It's $99 for two years of coverage, and includes full immersion. Most plans do not. It also only has a $50 deductible. It can be used on any device, not just AT&T's, so for those on other carriers, it's a great option. Interestingly, iPhones get a discount to $99; owners of Android smartphones are "discriminated against" slightly and have to pay $124.
However, the AT&T insurance program has two great advantages: it covers loss or theft. That's uncovered by the SquareTrade's program.
To insure, or not to insure, that is the question. If you have butterfingers, you might want to consider it. Otherwise, invest in a good case and stay away from toilets.
