Symantec has reversed field on its earlier statements about how source code for an old security product was acquired by hackers. The company had earlier claimed the code was obtained from Indian military servers, but came clean on Tuesday, saying that the code was hacked in a far more embarrassing manner for a security firm: from its own servers back in 2006.
The hackers obtained source code for Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, Norton Internet Security, Norton SystemWorks (Norton Utilities and Norton GoBack), and PCAnywhere, the company said in a statement. Remember, this 2006-era source code, meaning it "should be" obsolete compared to current versions, and shouldn't give hackers or competitors insight into Symantec's current security methodologies.
The company's statement was, "Upon investigation of the claims made by Anonymous regarding source code disclosure, Symantec believes that the disclosure was the result of a theft of source code that occurred in 2006."
While users of Symantec's security products do not face increased risk, the company said users of PCAnywhere, its remote-access suite, may face a "slightly increased security risk," and that it is in the process of notifying those users and providing them with a solution to protect their data.
Meanwhile, where was the source code that Yama Tough, the hacker group which appears to be tied to Anonymous, promised to release on Tuesday? The group said in a Tweet on Tuesday that it had decided to delay the release:
"We've decided not to release code to the public until we get full of it =) 1st we'll own evrthn we can by 0din' the sym code & pour mayhem."
"0din" quite possibly stands for "zero-daying," which is the practice of attacking users of unpatched and vulnerable software.
A hacker who goes by the handle "Yama Tough" has announced that he will post the full source code of Symantec Corp's Norton Antivirus software. As we reported earlier, however, the source code that was hacked from Indian government servers wasn't for Symantec's flagship Norton product, but instead for old (and we mean old) enterprise security software.
The source code was given to the Indian government in order for them to inspected by them to "ensure" that the product was secure. The authorities left the code on servers which were then accessed by the hackers, showing that the product may have been secure, but the Indian servers were not.
"Yama Tough" has already posted snippets of the code. The code released on Pastebin so far points to the code being from 1999. Symantec itself earlier said the code was from obsolete Enterprise products, not their Norton Security line of consumer products.
"Yama Tough" Tweeted: "This comming (sic) Tuesday behold the full Norton Antivirus 1,7Gb src, the rest will follow,"
In their latest statement, Symantec said:
"The code for Norton Utilities that was posted publicly is related to the 2006 version ... [and is] no longer sold or supported.
"The current version of Norton Utilities has been completely rebuilt and shares no common code with Norton Utilities 2006. The code that has been posted for the 2006 version poses no security threat to users of the current version of Norton Utilities."
Odds are that neither hackers or competitors will get much information out of this release, at least not current, up-to-date information. Still, despite the fact that the insecure servers were India government servers, there is still nothing so embarrassing as a security firm hacked in one way or another.
