A real Twitter fail whale: Tweeted death threat to Kyle Williams after NFC championship miscues

23 January, 2012 (17:57) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Twitter has been used to report breaking news from disasters, protests, and more, but it's sad to see it used in the following manner: San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams received a Tweeted death threat after fumbling a punt in the 49ers' 20-17 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday, Jan. 22.

The fumble occurred in overtime when Williams fielded a punt inside the 49ers 20 and took off, only to see the ball stripped by the Giants' Jacquian Williams, giving the Giants the ball at the 49ers' 24. A few plays later, the Giants' Lawrence Tynes kicked a 31-yard field goal, and the 49ers lost the NFC championship game to the New York Giants 20-17.

Imagine how Williams felt, as he already muffed an earlier punt in the game, early in the fourth quarter. That muff gave the Giants the ball deep in 49er territory; they scored to take a 17-14 lead, which the 49ers later tied to put the game into OT.

Imagine how Kyle Williams felt when he went home, checked Twitter, and saw the above Tweet from Javier Pasquel, which said "@KyleWilliams_10. I hope you, youre (sic) wife, kids and family die, you deserve it."

Indeed, Kyle Williams cost the 49ers ten points, and the game. But if you really want to blame someone blame the doctors, or the injury bug. Williams would not have been in that position --- punt returner --- if their regular return man Ted Ginn, Jr. wasn't injured.

It's not as though the rest of 49ers WR corps lit up the stadium on Sunday. Only one WR --- Michael Crabtree --- had a catch. And their WR corps was really light on Sunday, as well, with Ginn, Jr., and Josh Morgan out with injuries, and after the 49ers released Braylon Edwards, earlier.

Williams may be receiving Twitter death threats, but he's receiving encouragement from his team. QB Alex Smith, himself a focal point for 49er fan disdain over the years, said, “We all know him. We know how committed he is to winning. It’s not on him. I look at the 1-for-13 on third downs. I know he’s going to feel bad, but he’s still part of our team. We didn’t lose the game there. We lost it across the board offensively. We just couldn’t get it done.”

Star LB Patrick Willis added, “I told him we’re all in this together. I believe in him. If I had a do-over, he’d still be my guy back there. He’s a tremendous athlete.”

The Tweet is still live on Twitter, and so is the account. For those into technology, Pasquel used Twitter for BlackBerry, meaning he's using that dying platform. 'Nuff said?

Amazon Appstore’s free app of the day, 6/8/2011: Pocket Salsa

8 June, 2011 (13:59) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Amazon.com has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today's app is Pocket Salsa.

Pocket Salsa is priced at $1.99 in the Android Market. It is normally priced at $1.99 in the Amazon Appstore (as noted previously, the two marketplaces sometimes have differing prices).

Pocket Salsa is described as follows:
So you and your sweetie are quite the jitterbugs. You're aces at Lindy Hop, you tap like Fred and Ginger, and you can glide through any ballroom when waltzing, but you're looking for another challenge. Something spicier. Maybe even sexier. It's time to try the taste of Salsa.

Grab a Partner and Learn to Salsa
Whether you and your partner hit the dance studio daily or you've never done more than fumble through a rhythm action video game, you can step into Pocket Salsa with ease. It contains over 100 easy-to-follow Salsa lesson videos with moves that you can watch, study, and practice anywhere you take your Android device.

Moves from Mild to Muy Caliente
Pocket Salsa offers lessons from beginning- to advanced-level to get you on the dance floor with confidence. The Addicted2Salsa teaching methodology makes it easy to start learning and helps you become a capable dancer quickly. Most lessons require two people, but you can learn the basics and the rhythm on your own.

In between watching videos, listen to the Practice Rhythms like the Basic Clave, 3-2 Clave w/ Tumbao, Trumpet Solo, and Electric Guitar Solo to learn the various clave patterns. Don't have a partner at the moment? Commit these to memory so that you'll feel the rhythm the next time you team up. If you don't have any Salsa music for accompaniment, you can even dance to these samples by themselves.

Save Your Faves
Trying to learn some footwork and kick shines? Don't quite have those hand flicks and turns down? Download the video lessons that you are working on mastering right now so you can view them even when you don't have a network connection. Just tap the star next to the video, and the video will download to your SD card.

More Salsa dance lesson videos are continually added in the Podcast section. You can also learn more by going to the Addicted2Salsa website.
Pocket Salsa has what looks to be 5-stars in the Android Market (but obviously, isn't), but only a 2.5-star rating in the Amazon Appstore. There is a Lite Salsa Videos version as well.

As far as why the app is rated so low in the Amazon Appstore, it appears to be permissions again. A frequent Amazon.com issue, many cite "too many permissions," which for some reason does not seem to be as much of an issue on the Android Market.

Amazon opened up the Appstore despite a lawsuit by Apple, which has previously trademarked the term "App Store." Microsoft has filed an appeal against that trademark, saying the term is too generic. Amazon.com has responded to the lawsuit in the same manner.

The iPhone 4 screen: scratchproof but not fumble-proof

11 June, 2010 (07:04) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Why anyone would believe, at least with today's technology, that the screen of the new iPhone 4 would be indestructible is beyond us. However, we now have empirical evidence that it is not.

iFixYouri, a repair shop, took some spare iPhone parts (meaning an iPhone 4, minus the circuit board), and did some drop testing. They noted it was an informal test, and didn't video it (unfortunately).

In the comments of their post, they went into more detail on the testing than they did in the post itself, saying:
This was an informal test. We actually did the first break dropping it flat on the face. We ended up getting many requests to do more ‘real world’ drops. On the corner, back, etc, and we still able to get it to break. We did not slam, hurl, or spike the phone.

For the second round, we took the phone and dropped it ways that people drop their iPhones normally. Taking it out of your pocket, fumbling it, etc. We did not slam the phone. It was a drop test. That’s all. i.e. taking the phone and dropping it. It did withhold breakage more than expect. It took about 6-7 time of dropping it to get it to break.

I beg to differ that this showed nothing, we showed that the phone did break

We also performed a scratch test, in which it held up nicely against key, razors, and screwdrivers. Not a mark.

We’re just trying to inform the general public that it’s not indestructible.
It's nice that it appears scratchproof. Still, if you want full protection and don't mind a littl;e extra bulk, it would seem that when ivySkin or Otterbox release their (expected) new iPhone 4 cases with front protection, they might be good investments.
