iPhone 4S already the second most popular Flickr camera phone

23 November, 2011 (08:04) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Well, that was fast. The iPhone 4S, despite only being launched slightly more than a month ago, is already the No. 2 camera phone on Flickr.

It's not anywhere near close to the iPhone 4, however. The iPhone 4 ranks as the No. 1 camera, not just camera phone, on Flickr. It took that honor away from the Nikon D90 sometime in June of this year.

In 2009, the iPhone first rose to the top of cameras on Flickr. However, at the time, Flickr was bundling all the different iPhone models together. Now, it breaks them apart into separate categories.

Right now, in fact, the top camera phones are the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 3G, and the iPhone 3GS. The HTC Evo 4G is the only non-iPhone in the top 5.

In terms of cameras, overall, it's the iPhone 4, the Nikon D90, and then three Canons: the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the Canon EOS REBEL T2i, and the Canon EOS 7D.

27 August, 2011 (14:42) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Amazon.com has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today's app is Photo Enhance Pro.

Photo Enhance Pro is priced at $4.88 in the Android Market. Meanwhile, it is normally priced at $4.99 in the Amazon Appstore. As we noted previously, prices sometimes differ between the two stores.

Photo Enhance Pro is described as follows:
Get better photos without a better camera. Unleash the creativity and make your phone photos look amazing. Using HDR tone-mapping techniques to add detail to your images, a variety of scale adjustments, and a cropping tool, Photo Enhance Pro makes your photo gallery a lot more interesting.
Full Special Effects Menu

Photo Enhance Pro brings a comprehensive special photo effects studio right to your Android device. Choose the Adjust tab to alter the brightness, contrast, saturation, and tone of your photos. Alter the enhancement of the image from Standard, High Impact, and Maximum Effect. The cropping tool superimposes a handy grid over the photo, and allows you to enter a numercical x:y ratio to get that perfectly precise crop.

Choose between hi-black and rotated view before or after making other alterations. The Settings feature a full range of options, including tone mapping strength, saturate shadows, high-impact mono, default crop ratio, and more.
Before and After

Comparing the original photo with the altered is easy with a simple tap on the image. The image is only saved when you choose to save it after making the desired changes, so play with the effects all you want without worrying about losing the original.

Save hi-resolution images to your SD card and share your masterpieces by e-mail, Bluetooth, Facebook, FlickFolio, Flickr, Gmail, Peep, Picasa, or PicSay Pro.
Photo Enhance Pro has a 4.3-star rating in the Android Market and a 3.0-star rating in the Amazon Appstore.

Turn Your Everyday Spending into College Savings! The developer was somewhat hammered on the Amazon Appstore because he placed his own "review" of the product, which was in reality just more detail on the product. Why he did not have Amazon.com edit the product description is unknown. Notably, he only gave his own app 4 stars, which in our book means he is fairly honest.

Those who are considering "buying" a Free Amazon Appstore app might want to consider what it means to developers.

Amazon.com opened up the Appstore despite a lawsuit by Apple, which has previously trademarked the term "App Store." Microsoft has filed an appeal against that trademark, saying the term is too generic. Amazon.com has responded to the lawsuit in the same manner.

Amazon.com has promised to make a paid app free every day in the Amazon Appstore, and today's app is Trip Journal.

Trip Journal is priced at $1.41 in the Android Market. Meanwhile, it is normally priced at $0.99 in the Amazon Appstore. As we noted previously, prices sometimes differ between the two stores.

Trip Journal is described as follows:
A Multimedia Travelogue

Trip Journal enables you to capture your vacation and travel experiences and share them with your friends and family in real time. Share your travel experiences day-by-day and your completed travelogue using Trip Journal's built-in links to Facebook, Google Earth, Trip Journal, Picasa, Flickr, Youtube, and Twitter.

Your Navigator and Record-Keeper

Trip Journal functions as your navigator and record keeper, always there to keep you oriented and on course, and to document your progress. You can check you current position at any time by tapping the "Locate on map" icon; both map and satellite views are available. Tap the compass icon not only to confirm the direction you're moving in, but to see how your trip is progressing. Look at the top of the screen to find the distance you've traveled and the time that's elapsed since the start of your trip, your average speed over the course of the journey, and the minimum and maximum altitudes you've reached.

Capture Your Experiences

These are automatically saved to your trip album. Record thoughts and impressions about your experiences as journal notes on the vintage notepaper template under "Write a note." Whenever you review or share your trip album, these notes, images, and videos will be included.

Bring Your Readers Along with You

Trip Journal also makes it easy to share your travel experiences. The app includes built-in links to Facebook, Google Earth, Trip Journal, Picasa, Flickr, Youtube, and Twitter that you can use to instantly upload your routes, photos, video, notes, and more. Embed your trip in your blog to bring all of your followers along on your journey. And, when you've completed your trip, you have a complete, ready-made Trip Journal album to keep and share, preserving the whole adventure.
  • Compiles ready-made, multimedia journal album as you go
  • Supports blog updates and embedding
  • Supports Android's Froyo mobile platform.
Trip Journal has a 4.1-star rating in the Android Market and a 3.0-star rating in the Amazon Appstore.

Although GPS issues were a major reason for the lower score at Amazon.com, permissions issues were also a problem. Amazon Appstore buyers, for some reason, tend to be more cautious about app permissions. There's nothing wrong with this, it's just surprising how much more they examine permissions than Android Market buyers do.

iPhone 5 camera to sport dual-LED flash: report

24 June, 2011 (07:07) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

It's come to this. Excitement about the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4S, whatever it is called) is such that the fact that it may carry dual LED flash is big news.

iPad CasesRealistically, dual LED flash does help considerably in low light conditions. The iPhone 4 is already the top camera on Flickr, but quite a few other smartphones carry dual LED flash already.

Apple has never been one to lead in technological advances for its iPhone, however, preferring to play it safe and ensure that any technology in its devices are well-tested, don't affect battery life adversely, and provide the best end-user experience possible within constraints.

The report states that Everlight Electronics, Edison Opto and Lite-On Technology being targeted as potential suppliers. Naturally, all of them denied they are involved in the production of dual-LED flashes for Apple.

Market reports have already indicated that Apple reduced its orders for Lumiled high-power LED flash products from Philips recently, switching the orders for LED flashes to Taiwan makers.

Another welcome rumor is that Apple might upgrade the iPhone camera from 5MP to 8MP, although it was demonstrated when the iPhone 4 launched that sheer number of megapixels does not make one smartphone camera superior to another.

iPhone 4 rises to the top of Flickr cameras

22 June, 2011 (07:11) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

In April, we reported that the iPhone 4 camera was about to pass the Nikon D90 to become the most popular camera on Flickr, and it's managed to do just that.

The Nikon D90 is in second, and it's interesting how nearly constant its share of users has remained. The 3 - 5 spots are taken by three Canon EOS cameras, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi and the EOS Rebel T1i.

Great Rebate Offers From BeachCameraIt's not the first time an iPhone has ranked so high: in 2009, the iPhone overtook the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi as the most popular camera on Flickr. However, at that time Flickr combined the iPhone models together. Now it breaks them out separately.

That split is also shown among the smartphone numbers. There the iPhone 4 is (naturally) the top model, followed followed by the iPhone 3G, 3GS and then the HTC Evo 4G Android smartphone. The top five is rounded out by the iPod touch, which is somewhat of a surprise given its wi-fi only functionality.

One caveat to the crowning of the iPhone 4: Flickr notes that feature phones may be under represented. They still greatly outnumber smartphones, but as Flickr says,
The graphs are only accurate to the extent that we can automatically detect the camera used to take the photo or shoot the video (about 2/3rds of the time). That is not usually possible with cameraphones, therefore they are under-represented.

Clinton: anguished look in iconic Flickr Situation Room image may have been an allergy

6 May, 2011 (07:04) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

The intense, pressure-packed White House Situation Room photo that is on its way to becoming Flickr's most viewed image has one iconic sub-image. It shows Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with her hand over her mouth, in what seems to be a gesture of anxiety. It may instead have simply been an allergy.

It's unclear if Clinton was joking about the moment, however. She said, while addressing a news conference in Rome where she was attending an international meeting to discuss the Libyan conflict and ways to assist rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafi's regime:
"Those were 38 of the most intense minutes. I have no idea what any of us were looking at that particular millisecond when the picture was taken. "I am somewhat sheepishly concerned that it was my preventing one of my early spring allergic coughs. So it may have no great meaning whatsoever."
Oh, but to be a fly on the wall during those intense moments.

In addition to that statement, Clinton added
"Bin Laden's death sent an unmistakable message about the strength of the resolve of the international community to stand against extremism and those who perpetuate it. But the battle against al-Qaeda and its affiliates does not end with one death,' she added, speaking in Rome."
