Veena Malik blasts Rahat Fateh Khan and Pakistani double standards

18 March, 2011 (11:32) | Bollywood Gossips, Songs and Music | By: Hassan Gulzar,Waqas Bosan

In a no holds barred interview with Subhash K Jha, Veena Malik blasts fellow-Pakistani Rahat Nusrat Fateh Khan for breaking Indian laws.

What was the general opinion in Pakistan and your opinion on Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan being detained in India for FERA violence?
Dekhiye hamare mulk mein bahut sari baatein kahin gayi isske bare mein. People there said because Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Saab is an artiste so he should have been treated with leniency. I disagree.

In my opinion he was let off lightly with just a fine. But the Indian laws are equally applicable to Indians and Pakistanis. Look at what Salman Khan has gone through for his black-buck case…Or Sanjay Dutt…in spite of being Indians they’ve faced the full impact of the laws here.

I feel happy that the laws are followed so scrupulously in India. Fateh Ali Saab was earning so much money in India. In my opinion he should’ve paid his taxes in the proper way.

So you think the hue and cry against his detention in Pakistan was uncalled-for?
Main aapo ek baat bataaon? If a female Pakistani artiste had been similarly detained in India Pakistani reactions would’ve been different. Because that was Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Saab they said, let him go.

If it was Veena Malik they’d have said, where did she get this money from? Mere oppar itna kichad oochala jata.

I’d have been sullied and damned. I’d like to tell my people, Khuda ke vaste double standards khatam karo. Let’s treat men and women equally.

How do you pay taxes in India when Pakistani artistes are not allowed to open bank accounts in India?
I paid 40 percent taxes on my earnings from Bigg Boss. They deducted the tax at source. My money was transferred to me in Pakistan. That’s the way to do it.

I’ve never accepted cash for any of my commitments in India. I am clear on this. If I am paying taxes in Pakistan I’ll pay them here as well.

What are you in India for this time?
I am doing two reality shows. After being on Big Boss I got offers from four Indian television channels to host cricket shows. I also got an offer to do the new season of Fear Factor. But the stunts particularly those requiring me to eat alien things, were too disgusting for me.

So I declined the offer although friends advised me to go for it. I’ve worked with a news channel in Pakistan as well. When I got a chance to do a cricket show I grabbed it. I am having a blast.

And when people like Anshuman Gaekwadji and Chetan Sharmaji ask me if I’ve been doing cricket commentary for a long time I’m deeply flattered. Because I’m doing this for the for the first time.

I don’t think people in any part of the world are as cricket-crazy as India and Pakistan. I am one of those cricket fiends. As a child I’d comment on matches from my home…as though I was on radio or television.

Any film offers in India?
Oh yes. There was an offer for an item number in a big film. Then I got an offer to do film with Aftab Shivdasani. But they had their sets ready and they wanted me to join immediately in March.

This month I’ll sign a few films and there’re at least a couple of other reality shows which are almost finalized…I’m supposed to return to Pakistan on April 2.

Hmmm why do I get the feeling that I won’t be returning to Pakistan for a while? (laughs).

Shakira in SRK’s music video….

13 March, 2011 (11:27) | Bollywood Gossips, Songs and Music | By: Hassan Gulzar,Waqas Bosan

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan is heard to have roped in the waka waka lady Shakira for a music video.

The sexy Latin singer Shakira will groove with SRK in the new music video for his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. The song has been composed by Salim-Suleiman and rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
With the IPL season drawing nearer, the Baadshah of Bollywood, who had formerly lost interest in social networking sites, is now looking forward to make the most of them. He has appointed a group of individuals to look after the publicity of KKR on these sites.
Shahrukh bonded with Shakira on the sidelines of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa last year. Perhaps, the seeds of this collaboration were sown in their professional powwow back then.

"He has been arrested and will be produced in Patiala House court later today (Monday)," a DRI official said. Rahat had been taken to the DRI office at the CGO Complex on Sunday after he was detained at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, the singer was extensively questioned by revenue intelligence officials. ( Read: Pak seeks info about Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's detention in India )
He was on his way back to Pakistan after attending concerts and award functions in India. More than $100,000 were recovered from the 15-member troupe. Any amount in excess of $10,000 has to be declared by a traveller to the customs. ( Read: Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan detained at IGI with $1.24lakh )
According to officials, Rahat was questioned by senior DRI officials till late Sunday night. Rahat is the nephew of legendary singer late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and is popular both in India and Pakistan. His numerous hit songs from Indian films are a rage on both sides of the border, for which he has won several awards, including the recent Filmfare award for "Dil to Bacha Hai Jee". He was also a judge on the Indian music reality show "Chhote Ustad".
Pakistan has begun frantic efforts to secure the release of the singer. Pakistan foreign secretary Salman Bashir called Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad Sharat Sabharwal and discussed the matter around midnight on Sunday. He requested the Indian envoy to ensure that "no official should misbehave with Rahat during interrogation".

Veena Malik managed to make an impression in Big Boss

28 December, 2010 (06:29) | Bollywood Gossips, Songs and Music | By: sara2002

veena-malik[1]1

Much has been made about Veena Malik’s “behaviour” in the Bigg Boss House from the twin flirtations she struck to the short clothes she wore. To me, this spells Veena’s victory. Out of 14 housemates including a global star, Bollywood actors and Bhojpuri film industry’s Shahrukh Khan - Veena managed to make an impression.

While she was busy inside, the world outside was delirious with anger: how dare a Muslim, Pakistani woman conduct herself like this in, horror of horrors, India! The other side was also quick to retort: Veena is representing the ‘modern woman’ of Pakistan. For good measure, they threw in a comment or two about people completely irrelevant to the discussion such as, why aren’t Pakistani, Muslim men criticised for their behaviour while in India? And the answer to that could be that perhaps because we have yet to read about a similar controversy regarding, say, Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan or Ali Zafar.

As for me, I am neither the ‘moral brigade’ and nor am I part of the ‘immoral brigade’, so to speak. But I am the modern Pakistani woman, the girl who Veena was supposedly representing. As I observed everything and listened to arguments from both sides, I found one essential thing missing from both arguments: Veena Malik does not represent me. I do not relate to her and our similarity ends where it begins: like me, she is a woman, a Pakistani, a Muslim and she wears heels. And for some women, the latter two don’t hold either.

While I appreciated Veena at some point, especially for the proper Urdu she spoke, she is insignificant because there are much better rolemodels out there, people who I can actually relate to and look up to.

One such woman is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. An award-winning filmmaker, Sharmeen has worked with refugees, women’s advocate groups and human rights defenders in over ten countries. (More detail about her work can be found on her website.) Another woman who represents a woman like me is South Asia’s fastest woman - Naseem Hameed. A resident of a locality in Karachi populated by middle-income families, Naseem started her sporting career in school and was eventually spotted by army coaches. The rest is, as they say, history, with her winning a gold medal at the last SAF Games. Apart from individuals, the modern Pakistani woman is also lucky to have a whole team of good rolemodels. One is referring to the Pakistan women’s national cricket team which recently won a gold medal at the Asian Games.

To me, Veena Malik’s dresses, men and stilettos don’t matter because she does not represent me. The modern Pakistani woman goes out wearing whatever she wants baggy pants or running shoes and carrying whatever she wants a tote or a camera bag. The modern Pakistani woman is a success story who does not flirt with men to show to the rest of the world that she is good and has potential. I am a modern Pakistani woman who has a job, pays her taxes and drives around town. And I don’t need a Veena Malik to represent me not in India, not anywhere in the world.
