iTunes overwhelmingly has the lead in downloadable music, with Amazon MP3 a distant second. Will lowering its prices, effectively starting a price war with iTunes, make a difference?

Amazon MP3 now prices select hot-selling tunes for 69 cents, down from 89 cents previously. Many of the songs in Amazon's 69-cent store sell for $1.29 on iTunes. However, if they couldn't make a move on iTunes' market share with a $0.40 price advantage, will an extra 20 cents win them market share?

Among the songs that Amazon MP3 buyers can save nearly 50 percent on include, Katy Perry's "E.T.", Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor," The Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough," and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way."

Amazon MP3's digital download music market share sits at about 10 percent. Apple's iTunes continues to have about 70 percent of the digital download music market, according to the NPD Group.

In 2010, Apple went to a tiered pricing model. New releases went to $1.29 each, up from 99 cents. Despite that, Amazon MP3 continued to toddle along at 10 percent.

Some of this, of course, is because it is so easy to buy from iTunes, and load it onto your iDevice. However, Amazon.com has an MP3 downloader that takes any MP3s you buy from them and slaps it right into your iTunes library, without an issue. Considering the near 50 percent price difference, isn't Amazon MP3 worth a look?

>Piper Jaffray's latest bi-annual survey of high school students, now in its 21st year, was just released. This time out, the firm asked 4,500 teenagers about their interest in Apple products and digital music. The answer: teens love Apple.

If things go as the teens plan, and as we know their plans don't always meet reality, more than 50 percent of teens will own an iPhone within the next six months. That comes from the survey results which said that 17 percent already have one and 37 percent plan on buying the device in the next six months.

Meanwhile, 22 either own a tablet or have one in their house, and 20 percent of them plan to buy one in the next 6 months.

There isn't much question as to who owns digital downloads. Of those who own MP3 players, 86 percent have an iPod, up from 78 percent six months ago, with Zune holding second place at an abysmal 3 percent.

However, standalone MP3 players appear on their way out. Only 80 percent, down from 90 percent last fall, now own a standalone MP3 player. Meanwhile, the number who say they are using their handsets to listen to music is up from 50 percent last fall to 53 percent in PJ's latest survey.

The RIAA won't be happy with this statistic: of those teens who download music, 65 percent continue to use file-trading services. iTunes has an overwhelming market share among legal services, 95 percent. However, 37 percent of teens said they'd consider paying $15 a month for a music subscription.

Apple is talking to music companies in order to allow customers easier online access to music they purchased, according to a new Bloomberg report issued late Thursday, March 3.

The new program would serve a couple of purposes. It would be a sort of insurance policy for those who might see their iTunes libraries corrupted or destroyed. It would also allow those who have multiple iDevices to download their music to all their devices rather than having to tether to a computer and sync via iTunes.

Another reason for the policy change would be to bring the iTunes store in line with the App Store and the Mac App store, where re-downloads are allowed. However, it would shut down the rumors that Apple was planning to use MobileMe as a sort of cloud-based locker for content.

Will music labels go along with this? They've caved into Apple before, but they have also made certain demands of Apple, too. For example, when Apple removed DRM from its iTunes music content in 2009, it began selling music in tiers, something it was reluctant to do previously.

Piper Jaffray (PJC) has completed the 19th semiannual "Taking Stock With Teens" survey, and for Apple, the news couldn't be better. 31 percent of U.S. teens plan on an iPhone purchase in the next six months, and 14 percent already own one, and that is just the start of the good news.

Meanwhile, of those who own an MP3 player (87 percent), 92 percent own an iPod. One year ago, the number was 86 percent. iTunes share has been above 90 percent since 2008, and it was 92 percent in this survey.

Interestingly, of the 82 percent of teens who download music, only 43 percent do it legally. The RIAA must be disappointed.

One tidbit of slightly bad news is that the 14 percent number for teens who own an iPhone is down 1 percent from the last survey, six months ago. It is, however, up from 8 percent a year ago.

It will be interesting to see if PJC adds a question about the iPad in the next survey, six months from now. Also, since so many responded with plans to buy an iPhone in the next six months, it would be interesting to see if those respondents wait until the next-gen iPhone launch, expected in June / July.

Piper Jaffray surveyed approximately 900 students with an average age of 16.6 years across 12 U.S. cities and, in partnership with DECA (which is an international association of high school students), snagged online responses from an additional 5,100 students with an average age of 16.7 years.
