As we noted earlier, Amazon.com's Kindle app is still in the App Store, despite the fact that it violates the new App Store rules about linking to an external store. Competitor Borders, however, is not quite so bold, as it has just revised its e-reader app to be compliant with the new rules.
Previously, Borders app, which was updated on July 8, allowed users to view content from the Kobo store within the app, then buy it in the Safari browser. It's this usage of the Safari browser, which avoids the 30 percent surcharge that Apple makes from each in-app sale, which is now banned. It's the same method that the Kindle app still uses.
Now, it's new compliant app now "supports migration to Kobo.com," and redirects users to Kobo's e-reading app, which apparently continues to use links to Safari to sell books.
Borders isn't really a big player in e-book reading software, with its rating on the App Store at 2.5 stars. It's also no longer a big player in books, period; it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February. It recently announced that it would be selling itself to private investment firm Najafi Companies. for $215 million.
The big story here isn't really about Borders, since it's not a large player. It's about the fact that a company has blinked with regard to the new App Store rules. More specifically, an e-reader app has blinked, as Hulu earlier removed its links to buy subscriptions to Hulu Plus in response to the rules, too.
The question is, how long will Apple allow the Kindle app to stay in the App Store, as is? Or is it possible the app has already been modified, and is just awaiting approval?
Stepping out for a book signing that was Hilary Duff spotted at a Borders in Glendale, CA on Wednesday 1 December. The blonde beauty looked lovely as she signed copies of his new literary deal, "Elixir" for some lucky fans during the World AIDS Day fundraising efforts.
Google's e-book store, which had been expected to launch this summer, is nearly ready, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Additionally, the report says that it is set to debut in the U.S. by the end of 2010 and internationally in Q1 2011. Furthermore, independent booksellers have begun receiving contracts from their trade group and several publishers told the WSJ that they were exchanging files with Google, which is a sign that it is close to launch.
Independent booksellers are supposed to play a large role in Google Editions. Google Editions will reportedly work by allowing consumers to buy the e-books either directly from Google or from independent booksellers. The e-books will be tied to your Google account, which will allow buyers to read them anywhere and on any device.
It's clear why independents would love the idea. They don't have the money or resources necessary to launch their own such stores, as Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and Borders.
Of course, the project has been delayed before, and could still face further delays. Scott Dougall, a Google product management director explained the delays thus far, saying,
"Because of the complexity of this project, we didn't want to come out with something that wasn't thorough."
That gives all cause for celebration, the wedding was Justin's musical director / quitar player Dan Kanter to fashionista Yael Latner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto Sunday, October 3.
Have some days off, Justin and Borders set to fly to Hawaii this week for concerts Friday and Saturday before embarking on a 25-stop tour.
GameCrush, which has been in private beta testing since March of this year, has gone live. It's an obvious idea since most gamers are men: get them to pay to hook up online with attractive women and use their joysticks, er, play video games with them.
To be clear, the PlayDates, as they are called, can be men or women. They can make as much as $20 an hour, according to the site's press release. Meanwhile, gamers, seeking to play (ahem) with these PlayDates pay $0.60 a minute. Additionally, developers of games used on the site get rev share, as well.
In addition to securing a live one-on-one gaming session, you can chat live with online PlayDates. They show up on the site with red borders around their images. Obviously, some are a little more provocative with their images, such as Lavelle (above). On the other hand, LethalCupcake looks downright studious.
There are a number of Flash-based games integrated into the site, but GameCrush says it currently any game in a Player or PlayDate’s online multiplayer library, "including open-ended games, co-op games and competitive games. "
GameCrush was demonstrated onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield in San Francisco Tuesday, and one of the obvious questions that came up was if this could a video game version of ChatRoulette. The company was quick to note that GameCrush users aren’t anonymous, and that banning of IP address and other sorts of remedies exist.
When launched in March, the site had "flirty" or "dirty" game sessions. Now, GameCrush has created four gaming zones to help define the type of interaction between Players and PlayDates. These zones include:
The Arcade - Fun is the name of the game. Nice and chill.
The Arena - For serious gamers. Butt-kickings handed out left and right.
The Academy - Learn tips and tricks from experienced PlayDates.
The Edge - Not for the faint of heart. This could get interesting (More detail: IGN describes this zone as for players looking for something risque).

Soha Ali Khan bikini waxing MMS scandal is a Dud We have reason to believe that searching for the 'Soha Ali Khan waxing MMS scandal' might be an exercise in futility
Over the weekend, Bollywood websites and blogs went into a tizzy with reports of a "Soha Ali Khan waxing MMS scandal" video.
After trawling through several dead links and investigating the matter in detail, we can safely assume that it's a campaign by vested interests with an explicit purpose: to malign the actress.
Apparently, Saif's little sis underwent a bikini wax session at a beauty salon recently. Unknown to her, there were cameras strategically placed in the room that recorded her in various states of undress and in some scenes, from close quarters, says the report.
She didn't know... Mention is made that she is completely at ease, implying that all this was done without her knowledge and that the going price of the clips are anywhere between $20 to $30. It appears that a "leading" website (unnamed in every website and online report) shot this video in association with the salon.
Supposedly, the video shows her getting undressed and wearing a towel. Over time, her body is revealed. The salon attendant is then seen waxing her body including the bikini area. The video has been made into two episodes with "before" and "after waxing" shots.
Not to be simply content with that, the conversation (we assume doctored) borders on the "kinky". It's a troubling trend that actresses are frequently becoming victims to the online demand for show-and-tell videos.
Websites in order to attract hits, go to weird lengths to advertise MMS videos even as innocent actresses pay the price. With most people choosing to believe that these "skin flicks" are "real", it seems like a battle they're losing.
