RIM has taken an axe to the prices it charges for its BlackBerry PlayBook tablets in the UK - again.

You can now pick up the 16GB version of just £169. It was priced at £399 at launch, and yesterday would have set you back £249. That's roughly a third off in 24 hours.

The 32GB now costs £199, the 64GB tablet £249, down from £479 and £559, respectively.

A variety of retailers, including Carphone Warehouse and Dixons, have just applied the new prices.

RIM knocked £150 off the original prices in October 2011 in a bid to boost demand for the 7in tablets. Punters have not taken to the machine.

It didn't do much good, and just as October's cut followed a big price reduction in the States, so this latest round of reductions comes after RIM discounted again over there.

Amazon.com jettisons Illinois Associates to avoid ‘Internet sales tax’

12 March, 2011 (08:01) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Some states have been working around the fact that Amazon.com does not have a physical presence in their state, meaning that no sales tax needs to be collected by the giant online retailer. In an attempt to close budget gaps, they have been writing laws that say any "affiliate" or Amazon Associates in their state constitutes a physical presence. In doing so, they have ultimately been shooting themselves in the foot.

Illinois recently passed such a law, and signed it into effect on Thursday. Amazon.com swung the axe very quickly, telling its associates in that state that as of April 15, the company will terminate its association with them.

In doing so, not only does the state gain nothing in the war over Internet sales tax, it loses, as those Associates will no longer collect income from Amazon.com. That means less revenue in terms of income tax for the state.

In fact, one of those about to lose his Amazon Associate status is famed movie critic Roger Ebert, who Tweeted:
Amazon will terminate my Associates account on 4/15, in order to evade fair and just Illinois taxes. I have 20 more days to make a fortune.
The statement about "fair and just" depends on your point of view. In terms of sales tax and physical presence, the Supreme Court earlier made a ruling in 1992, Quill vs. North Dakota, in which the Court ruled that out-of-state retailers cannot be required to collect sales tax on purchases sent to states where they did not have a physical presence.
The Supreme Court’s reasoning was at least partially based on the fact that, at the time the case was decided in 1992, there were over 6,000 separate sales and use tax jurisdictions in the United States (states, localities, special tax districts, etc.) and to impose a collection obligation on a remote seller would impose a crushing burden that would severely restrict interstate commerce.
The problem with innumerable separate tax jurisdictions has not gone away. It should also be noted that even though retailers are not required to collect sales tax on out-of-state purchases, residents are supposed to add a so-called "use tax" into their state tax return for the sales tax. Many either do not know this, or knowing that it would be impossible for the state to tell how much they owe, ignore it.

One can argue that, however, that Amazon.com, as large as it is, could handle the burden of calculating and collecting sales tax. The lack of a sales tax burden for many states, however, means that Amazon.com has a big advantage over other retailers, particularly in high sales tax states like California.

Amazon.com recently warned California that if it were to enact a similar measure to Illinois', the company would jettison its 10,000 Associates there.

White iPhone 4s spotted in AT&T’s OLAM system

25 January, 2011 (08:07) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

Earlier leaked Best Buy and Vodafone screenshots indicating the long-awaited white iPhone 4 was coming have been seemingly confirmed by another leak, this time from AT&T. The white iPhone has been delayed for months, and the last public information from Apple targeted a Spring launch.

BGR
spotted references to both the white 16GB and 32GB versions of the iPhone 4 in AT&T’s Online Account Management (OLAM) system.

The OLAM system doesn't say just when the white-colored iPhone 4s may be showing up. However, it does tend to discount speculation that AT&T's spring launch for the white iPhone 4 was not a dodge intended to delay things until they could just axe the white iPhone 4 entirely.

However, the white version of the iPhone 4 is showing up so late one would wonder why anyone would buy it. It might be better to just wait until the iPhone 5 shows, a few months later. This argument has similarly been used as a reason to skip the Verizon iPhone 4, waiting instead for the Verizon iPhone 5.

MySpace to axe 55 – 60 percent of its workforce on Tuesday: report

11 January, 2011 (00:00) | Songs and Music, Technology News | By: Technology Expert

MySpace, which was once the king of social networking, but made mistakes and lost the title long ago to Facebook, is about to shed some 60 percent of its staff on Tuesday, according to a report.

The company will axe from 550 to 600 of its 1,000 employees, said the report, which added that the spin on the layoffs will be "shedding legacy products" and restructuring. Following that, News Corp. will attempt to sell the site, for which it paid some $580 million for in 2005. Currently, it's looking at private equity firms, but Yahoo! has also been mentioned as a suitor, although Yahoo! isn't exactly doing great on its own, right now.

It's clear that MySpace is, if not on its last legs, heading there. The Sync with Facebook feature that was unveiled in August, as well as the Mashup with Facebook feature from November, were probably embarrassing for a company that once dwarfed the now dominant social networking site.

Update: MySpace laid off nearly half their workforce.
