When last we left the saga of fake Apple stores in Kunming, China, authorities had found five fake stores, and closed two, but not because they cloned Apple's appearance, but just because they didn't have the appropriate business permits. We now return to Kunming to find another 22 counterfeit Apple stores in attendance.
Although previously it was reported that three clone stores were allowed to remain open, it appears that China's Administration for Industry and Commerce in the Yunnan provincial capital, with prompting from Apple China, has decided to crack down on all of the stores. They have been ordered the stores to stop using Apple's logo as a result of violating Apple's registered trademark, the official state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Earlier, while it was reported that Chinese law prohibits companies from copying the "look and feel" of other companies' store, in order to get that protection, companies have to apply for it. Authorities had to investigate whether or not Apple had done so.
China's market watchdog agency added that it would set up a complaint hotline and boost monitoring for such copycat operations. However, it did not indicate if the shops were selling counterfeit Apple products or genuine items purchased elsewhere. The first set of stores claimed they had "real" Apple products.
Apple has just four genuine Apple Stores in China, with two in Beijing and two in Shanghai. The company does have 13 authorized resellers in Kunming.

Chinese officials have order the closure two "counterfeit" Apple stores in Kunming, after investigating all the shops in the southwestern China city. Originally, it was reported that three elaborately camouflaged fake Apple Stores existed in the city; after officials did inspections it turned out there were a total of five.
However, the closures are not about cloning the store look, appearance, logo, etc, but instead because the stores did not have an official business permit. In fact, the first "clone" store to be reported in the media is not being closed. It is, according to Chinese authorities, applying for an official reseller license with Apple.
Chang Puyun, spokesman of Kunming government's business bureau said, "Media should not misunderstand the situation and jump to conclusions. Some overseas media has made it appear the stores sold fake Apple products. China has taken great steps to enforce intellectual property rights and the stores weren't selling fake products."
It was never clear whether or not the shops, discovered by an ex-pat American blogger, sold real Apple products, but this statement makes it sound like the answer is "yes."
