Richest Man in The World is Real Estate, Telecom Mogul Carlos Slim Helu
Forbes’ list of the world’s billionaires of 2010 is released this morning. Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world. Gates lost the title in 2008 to William Buffett, and after regaining it in 2009, this year he loses the title again to Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican businessman with ties to construction and telecommunications.
The new richest man in the world, 2010 version, Carlos Slim Helu, has a net worth of $53.5 billion, slightly above Bill Gates. Meanwhile, Warren Buffett trails in third at $47 billion. All saw their fortunes rise in the stock market in 2009.
The richest man in the world 2010 has ties to the construction industry, with his construction conglomerate, Impulsora del Desarrollo y el Empleo (IDEAL), which builds roads and energy infrastructure. IDEAL is active in transportation, crude oil and gas, power, water, real estate and technology.
The majority of Carlos Slim Helu’s wealth, however, comes from his telecommunications holdings. In fact, the richest man in the world 2010 saw his fortune swell by $18.5 billion in 2009. Much of that came from shares of America Movil, of which Slim owns a $23 billion stake. The stock was up 35% in a year.
Carlos Slim Helu was named the richest man in the world in 2007, but not in the “semi-official” Forbes list. That information came from a Mexican media source. This is the first time that Carlos Slim has appeared as the richest man in the world on the Forbes list.
Perusing past lists, however, he has been around the top for some time. In 2009, when Bill Gates regained his title as the richest man in the world from Warren Buffett, who took it in 2008, Slim was actually third. Meanwhile, in 2008, when Buffett was the richest man in the world, Slim was second, and Gates was third.
