Apple said on Wednesday that it has a fix already completed for the security vulnerability in iOS that allowed the iPhone Dev Team to create a web-based jailbreak. The flaw could allow hackers to download malware embedded in a PDF file onto an iDevice.

NOD32 v3.0 - Save 25% - Download NowThe security flaw is considered so serious that the German government issued an official warning to citizens about it on Wednesday.

On Wednesday an Apple spokeswoman said in a statement:
"We're aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update."
It's unclear when this update will be released. What is clear is that the fix will, of course, close the hole used by the JailbreakMe website.

Those who have already jailbroken their devices have, hopefully, already applied the workaround to protect them against the flaw. If they apply whatever OS revision Apple releases with the fix, they will not only lose the jailbreak, but any jailbreak-only programs they may have installed, as well as the ability to jailbreak again, until a new exploit is found.

Jailbreaking allows users to install programs that otherwise would be banned by Apple. An example would be the My3G app that allows programs (such as FaceTime) that only run over wi-fi to run on 3G. It also allows carrier unlocking to take place.
