Amazon ships free “Kindle for the Mac” app

Amazon.com has rolled out a Kindle desktop application for Mac OS X. The new application joins the apps that Amazon.com has for the iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, and Windows PC. Amazon.com will have an iPad version soon, as well.

These apps extend the reading of Kindle e-books from the Kindle to other devices. And, just like the other apps, Kindle for Mac will sync with your Kindle device, so if you’re reading an e-book on your Kindle while traveling (not driving, we hope) on a plane, you can pick up where you left off when you reach your hotel and open your MacBook.

However, the iPad will be shipping to Apple retail stores on April 3rd. That has been labeled by some as a "Kindle killer," though it is more expensive and more general purpose than the Kindle. It will be imperative for Amazon.com to get a Kindle iPad app out ASAP. Although Apple continues to say most iPhone apps will work unmodified on the iPad, in Zoom mode, anything this eye-intensive won't be attractive in that mode.
