The HTC Nexus One, AKA the "Google Phone,"
still appears to be a flop. Mobile analytics company Flurry has : Nexus One sales are still flopping. After 74 days on the market,
Flurry Analytics, a mobile analytics firm, estimates that Google has sold only 135,000 Nexus Ones.
Compare that with the Motorola Droid, which sold 1.05 million units in its first 74 days. In the first-generation iPhone's initial 74 days on the market, it sold 1 million units. That is specifically why 74 days was chosen as the delimiter: the magic 1 million unit mark for the original iPhone.
Meanwhile, as we know, the iPad sold 120,000 units in the first day alone. Sales
slowed significantly after that, however, and initial day sales have been attributed to "pure overexcited fanboyism."
The Nexus One has struggled for a number of reasons, though, that make the comparison less than an apple-to-apple one. The online-only sales of the device, as well as the fact that T-Mobile was the carrier involved in subsidized sales, were negatives.
Also, while the Nexus One ships unlocked, even if not tied to a T-Mobile account, it does not support 3G on AT&T's larger network.
Finally, the Droid had an extensive advertising campaign, particularly on TV, where you could see (and still do, to a lesser extent) Droid ads all over the place. The Droid also came out during the holiday shopping season.
Verizon's version of the HTC Nexus One should be arriving soon, sometime in the Spring, Google said. It's unclear if that will change things.
